Interview Dress Suggestions

MSU

You never get a second chance to make a good first impression. This theme is especially important during the interview. Your grooming and dress are important to putting your best foot forward. Always remember that the clothing you wear should enhance your personal style, and identify you as someone the employer would want as a representative of their company or organization.

SUIT CHOICES

Observe what other people wear in the field of employment you wish to enter and dress accordingly but professionally. Choose a good fabric with a tight weave that drapes well in neutral colors such as gray, tan, black, or navy. Navy blue and medium to dark gray suits are considered staples.

A good business wardrobe includes several suits of varied weights and conservative colors.

Suits should be properly tailored and freshly dry cleaned. Stick with a classic, conservative suit; avoid fashions that will go out of style.

SHOES

Keep to traditional shoes and hosiery.

SHIRT/BLOUSE

A white shirt/blouse (preferred color)

A professional wardrobe includes several shirts or simple blouses in white, blue, and other neutral colors.

It is helpful to select ties at the time of suit purchase. Ties or scarves can be mixed and matched with suits and shirts for different effects.

GROOMING

Hair should be styled and conservative.

Keep cologne or aftershave to a minimum, best if applied at least two hours before the interview. Because an interviewing room can be small, scents could be overpowering.

JEWELRY

Jewelry should be kept to the minimum and be tasteful.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Appropriate professional dress can vary depending on your career field. Talk to people employed in the field of interest to you and ask their advice.

REMEMBER: "Image is a tool one uses to accomplish an objective." The way you dress indicates how you want an employer to think of you. This was developed from various sources of information. No one particular source was used and is intended only as a guideline.
