Captain Sam J. Tangredi,
Senior Military Fellow, Institute for National
Strategic Studies, National Defense University
Captain Sam J. Tangredi, USN, is a
senior military fellow in the Institute for National
Strategic Studies at the National Defense University,
where he is a member of Quadrennial Defense Review
2001 Working Group. He is currently managing the
follow-up project to The Global Century volumes. He is
a surface warfare officer who has served in a fast
frigate, aircraft carrier, guided-missile destroyer,
and dock landing ship. His most recent command was USS
Harpers Ferry (LSD-49). A Navy sub-specialist
in Strategic Planning and International Negotiations,
and a fully-qualified Joint Specialty Officer, he has
served on the Joint Staff, as Special Assistant and
Speech writer to the Secretary of the Navy, and as
Head, Strategy and Concepts Branch, Office of the
Chief of Naval Operations. A graduate of the U.S.
Naval Academy and the Naval Postgraduate School,
Captain Tangredi earned a Ph.D. in International
Relations from the University of Southern California,
and was a national security fellow of the Hoover
Institution at Stanford University. He is the author
of over seventy articles and working papers on defense
issues, and recently appeared on The History Channel
in "The Great Ships" series.
