Dr.
Larry M. Wortzel, Director,
Asian Studies Center, The Heritage Foundation.
Dr. Larry Wortzel, Director of
the Asian Studies Center at the Heritage Foundation, a
former strategist for the Department of the Army and
Military Attache in China in 1995, briefed the ELF on
the political leadership changes in Peking, the
economic situation, and China's defense posture.
He predicted that politically, China will remain
communist for the near decade; while economically, it
will follow a free market approach. He expected that
Hong Kong’s relative freedom will slowly fade away. He
was pessimistic about the future of Taiwan. Dr Wortzel
believes that the Chinese stands in the fight against
international terrorism and in the Iraqi crisis were
similar to Putin’s Russia; and that it will not
create too much of a problem for the U.S. government.
