John Merrill is chief of the Northeast Asia Division of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, U.S. Department of State.
Merrill has held teaching and research positions at SAIS
(School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins
University), Asian Studies Program at Georgetown University, the George Washington University, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Lafayette College, Korea University, and the University of Delaware. Besides numerous journal articles, he has authored several books including
Korea: The Peninsular Origins of the War, 1945-1950 (University of Delaware Press, 1989). He has an M.A. in East Asian Studies from Harvard
University and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Delaware.
