American Society of Limnology and Oceanography"The American
Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) traces
its roots to the Limnological Society of America (LSA), which was
established in 1936 to further interest and research in limnological
science. While the LSA had
members working in both freshwater and marine systems, the name did not
reflect this until 1948 when the Oceanographic Society of the Pacific
merged with the LSA to become the American Society of Limnology and
Oceanography. Membership in the society has grown from 221 charter members
in 1936 to more than 3,800 members in 1993. Members are drawn from 58
countries including the United States, and more than a quarter of the
membership reside outside the U.S.
The purposes of ASLO are to promote the interests of limnology,
oceanography and related sciences, to foster the exchange of information
across the range of aquatic science, and to further investigations
dealing with these subjects." The ASLO journal is Limnology and Oceanography. Aquatic Plant Management Society
“The
Aquatic Plant Management Society, Inc. is an international organization
of scientists, educators, students, commercial pesticide applicators,
administrators, and concerned individuals interested in the management
and study of aquatic plants. Originally
the Hyacinth Control Society, Inc. when founded in 1961, the Aquatic
Plant Management Society, Inc. is a respected source of expertise in the
field of biological, mechanical, and chemical aquatic plant management
and aquatic plant species. The
objectives of the Society are to assist in promoting the management of
nuisance aquatic plants, to provide for the scientific advancement of
members of the society, to encourage scientific research, to promote
university scholarship, and to extend and develop public interest in the
aquatic plant science discipline.” The
Society’s journal is the Journal of Aquatic Plant Management. Association of Southeastern Biologists
The
purpose of the Association of Southeastern Biologists is "to
promote the advancement of biology as a science by encouraging research,
the imparting of knowledge, the application of knowledge to the solution
of biological problems, and the preservation of biological
resources."
Botanical Society of America
"The
Botanical Society of America
exists to promote botany, the field of basic science dealing with the
study and inquiry into the form, function, diversity, reproduction,
evolution, and uses of plants and their interactions within the
biosphere. To accomplish this mission, the objectives of The
Society are to: sustain and provide improved formal and informal
education about plants; encourage basic plant research; provide
expertise, direction, and position statements concerning plants and
ecosystems; and foster communication within the professional botanical
community, and between botanists and the rest of humankind through
publications, meetings, and committees." The
BSA journal is the American Journal of Botany.
Ecological Society of America
"The
Ecological Society of America (ESA) is a non-partisan, nonprofit
organization of scientists founded in 1915 to promote ecological science
by improving communication among ecologists; raise the public's level of
awareness of the importance of ecological science; increase the
resources available for the conduct of ecological science; and ensure
the appropriate use of ecological science in environmental decision
making by enhancing communication between the ecological community and
policy-makers." Journals
include Ecology, Ecological Applications, and Ecological
Monographs.
"The
Estuarine Research Federation (ERF) is an international organization
whose purpose is to promote research in estuarine and coastal
waters, to promote communication between members of affiliated
societies, to conduct meetings and to be available as a source of advice
in matters concerning estuaries and the coastal zone."
The ERF Journal is Estuaries.
International Society of Chemical Ecology
"The ISCE is organized exclusively for scientific purposes, more specifically to promote the understanding of interactions between organisms and their environment that are mediated by naturally occurring chemicals. Research areas include the chemistry, biochemistry and function of natural products, their importance at all levels of ecological organization, their evolutionary origin and their practical application." The Society’s journal is the Journal of Chemical Ecology.
North American Benthological Society
"The North American Benthological Society (NABS) is an international scientific organization whose purpose is to promote better understanding of the biotic communities of lake and stream bottoms and their role in aquatic ecosystems, by providing media and disseminating new investigation results, new interpretations, and other benthological information to aquatic biologists and to the scientific community at large. The Society was founded as the Midwest Benthological Society by 13 charter members at Havana, Illinois, in the spring of 1953."
The NABS journal is the Journal of the North American Benthological Society.
North American Lake Management Society
"The North American Lake Management Society's mission is to forge partnerships among citizens, scientists, and professionals to foster the management and protection of lakes and reservoirs for today and tomorrow."
The society's journal is Lake and Reservoir Management.
Society of Wetland Scientists
"The
Society of Wetland Scientists is a non-profit organization founded in
1980 to promote wetland science and the exchange of information related
to wetlands. The
objectives of the Society are to: operate solely and exclusively
as a charitable and educational organization to foster conservation and
understanding of wetlands; advance public education and enlightenment
concerning the Nation's wetland resources; provide an independent forum
for an interchange of ideas and data developed within wetland science;
develop and encourage wetland science as a distinct discipline by
supporting student education, curriculum development, and research;
encourage and evaluate the educational, scientific, and technological
development and advancement of all branches of wetland science and
practice; and encourage the knowledgeable management of wetland
resources." The
SWS journal is Wetlands.
