CLASS TIME AND PLACE

Section 1 – 11:00 – 11:50 MW; 119 Harned Biology

LABORATORY

Every student must be enrolled in a laboratory section during the same semester the class is scheduled.  The course grade is based on the class grade plus the laboratory grade.  Information on the laboratories (quiz policy, grading, absences, etc.) will be given during the first laboratory meeting.  Laboratories will not meet until January 21, 2003.

CLASSROOM RULES

Please do not eat or drink in the classroom.  Cut your cell phones off during class or put them on silent.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance is required for all classroom and laboratory meetings.  No cuts are allowed.  However, as both excused and unexcused absences to occur, the following policy is followed.

1.        Each lecture missed counts as 1 hour absence.  Each laboratory missed counts as

2 hours absence with the exception of the first time you are absent from the laboratory.  The first time counts as 1 hour's absence rather than two.  Each additional laboratory missed counts as two hours absence.

2.             0-3 hours absence (lecture plus laboratory) – 1% (2 ½ points) is added to your total numerical score (lecture plus laboratory) in the course.  This is to reward class attendance and is the factor used in determining the grade when your numerical score is borderline.

3.             4-10 hours absence (lecture plus laboratory) – The grade is based strictly on the numerical score.

4.             11-20 hours absence (lecture plus laboratory) – The grade is based on the numerical score reduced by 1 letter grade.  Any student falling in this category of 11-20 absences, all of which are documented events such as accidents requiring hospitalization, jury duty, prolonged illnesses requiring multiple doctor's visits, etc. will have the option of dropping the class subject to approval of the Dean of their college or remaining in the class with the grade being reduced by 1 letter.

Arrangements for making up work missed due to sanctioned absences as defined by the Arts and Sciences "Sanctioned Absence Policy" must be made at the beginning of the semester.

5.             21-30 hours absence (lecture plus laboratory) – The grade is reduced by two letters.

6.             31-40 hours absence (lecture plus laboratory) – The grade is reduced by 3 letters.

7.       Three classroom tardies count as 1 hour's absence.

Note:  A student who slips out of the classroom after signing the sign-in sheet will be charged with a "double" (2 hours instead of one) absence.  If you come in late, you must notify the instructor at the end of the period (before leaving the classroom) to have the "absence" changed to a tardy.  Otherwise the absence stands.

LECTURE EXAMINATION POLICY

1.             There are four lecture examinations, three during the semester (non-comprehensive, announced 1 week in advance) and a final examination.  The final will also be non-comprehensive and like the other three, it is a one hour exam.  It is given the first hour of the final exam period.

2.             All four are 100 point examinations, and account for 4/5's of your total numerical score in the course 400 of the 500 total points.  Each covers about ¼ of the lecture material.

3.             Exams will be either multiple choice, matching, true-false or a mix.  These examinations will cover both the lecture and reading material.

4.             You must be at all exams.  If an exam is missed because of a valid reason (i..e. sickness, death in the immediate family), a make-up exam will be scheduled.

5.             There are no drop grades and no extra points available in lecture.

LABORATORY EXAM POLICY
