American Mayapple as a domestic source of chemotherapy drugs

Mayapple contains podophyllotoxin, the precursor used for the semi-synthesis of various chemotherapy drugs (ie. Teniposide, Etoposide) used to treat various forms of cancer. We are developing mayapple as an alternative crop for the US farmers. In 2006, 38 mayapple colonies across 18 states were sampled and analyzed for their podophyllotoxin content. A manuscript is under preparation.
