Collections
Greenhouse:
T. Holder
The department has a 120 square meter greenhouse which houses a diverse
teaching collection, and has space available for class and research
projects.

Herbarium (MISSA):
G. Ervin
(ecology) and L.
Wallace (systematics)
The Mississippi State University Herbarium houses approximately 30,000
vascular plant specimens. The collections are worldwide in scope, with a
strong focus on the southeastern United States, especially the state of
Mississippi. We have been collaborating with The Pullen Herbarium (MISS)
at the University of Mississippi to database locality and other pertinent
information from the collection.
Fish Collection:
C. Taylor
The MSU fish collection currently consists of almost 9000 catalogued lots.
The majority of the lots are from collections throughout the state of
Mississippi and include species from freshwater, marine, and estuarine
habitats. The fish collection is of considerable historical importance. A
large part of it consists of collections from the upper Tombigbee River
drainage before the river's biological integrity was insulted by the
construction of the Tennessee-Tombigbee (Tenn-Tom) Waterway.
Bird and Mammal Collections:
E. Linder
The bird and mammal collections both have good representations of
Mississippi specimens as well as representative organisms from around the
world. The mammal collection includes fairly large series of Virginia
opossum (Didelphis virginianus ), Peromyscus mice of several
species, eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis ), and raccoon (Procyon
lotor).
In addition to the skin holdings, the bird
collection includes many skeletons and eggs, including a large series of
House Sparrow (Passer domesticus ) eggs and Starling (Sturnus
vulgaris ) skins and skeletons.
Fish Laboratory:
C. Taylor
The fish laboratory is a 7200 square foot facility allowing controlled
experimentation with aquatic organisms.
