Blanchard Springs
Caverns

One of the many streams outside the Caverns

Blanchard Caverns is one of the most spectacular and carefully developed caves anywhere. Here you will enter a "living cave where glistening speloeothems, like stalactites, stalagmites, columns, an flowstones are are slowly changing. These crystalline formations are the result of minerals deposited by dripping water.

Here we will go on a Wild Cave Tour. This is a strenuous trip through undeveloped parts of the middle level of the cave. It is a guided tour. The tour emphasis will be on the formation of the caves and the different types of limestone formations. There is another tour, Dripstone Trail Tour, that the park offers for those who would prefer something less strenuous. This tour lasts about an hour.

Some questions that you should focus on.

1. Why does the temperature in the cave stay at a constant 58 degrees?

2.  How is the cave climate different from the environment on the surface?

3. Why does the humidity stay around 97 to 100 percent?

4. What causes the formations to be different colors?

5. Why is Blanchard Caverns considered a "living cave"?
