Mississippi
Embayment Region

We will begin our journey  leaving Memphis Tn, on I- 40 going west to I-55 north, then north on US 63. to Jonesboro. When we enter Arkansas we are in the Mississippi Embayment Region. This region of Arkansas has been referred to as the "Delta" because it is an area shaped by the Mississippi, Ohio and Arkansas Rivers over many years.  The region is part of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain.  The northernmost boundary is the Missouri state line and the southernmost boundary is the Louisiana state line.  The region reaches to the west as far as Little Rock and to the east to the Mississippi River.   The region widens out to include the area east of Little Rock and narrows toward the Mississippi River on both ends.  This area of the state is the lowland area and many parts of this region remain covered in water year-round.  Man has drained some areas and used the deep alluvial soil for extensive agriculture. We will be visiting the rice paddies of Arkansas for our first stop.

If you would like to find out more information on this area of Arkansas go to Delta.
