The Ouachita region is one of two major uplands of Arkansas. It lies in west central Arkansas between the Arkansas River Valley and the West Gulf Coastal Plain. This area contains thermal springs and the only diamond mines open to the public. The mountains of this region are unusual for this continent because they run in a east west alignment and were created by folding and uplifting of the earth's surface.
