Arkansas is divided into six physiographic regions. Each one very distinct
from the other. The Mississippi Embayment region, also known as the delta,
is an area shaped by the Mississippi, Ohio, and Arkansas Rivers. Crowley's
Ridge lies within the Mississippi alluvial plain. It is a narrow strip
of land that lies 150 to 200 miles from the Missouri state line down to
Helena, Arkansas. The Ozark Plateau is an upland region of Arkansas. It
is an uplifted and eroded plateau. The Arkansas River Valley lies between
the Ozarks and Ouachita regions. The region is dominated by the Arkansas
River. The Ouachita region has mountains that run east - west which is
unusual for the North American continent. The last region is the West Gulf
Coastal Plain. This area was once a shallow sea and is where oil and gas
is mined in the state. On this seven day tour we will be exploring all
six regions and learn about the wide diversity in geology that exists in
Arkansas.
