The American Council of Learned Societies draws together learned societies
and affiliates for consideration of shared concerns, particularly those
relating to maintaining and improving conditions for scholarship, education,
and communication among scholars in the humanities and social sciences.
It also directly supports humanistic scholarship through sponsorship of

Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowships for Recently Tenured Scholars

These fellowships support long-term, unusually ambitious projects in the
humanities and related social sciences. The ACLS will award up to 11 Burkhardt
Fellowships in this competition year, each carries a stipend of $75,000.

The American Philosophical Society began assisting research by individual
scholars in 1933. Today, the Society supports several major grant or fellowship
programs to continue in the promotion of useful knowledge.
Grants are for research only. The Society makes no grants for study, travel
to conferences, workshops or to consult with other scholars, for permanent
equipment, or assistance with publication or translation. The purpose
of all programs is to put scholars in contact with the objects of their
research.
Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation

The Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation awards yearly grants to writers in
three rotating disciplines: Theatre, Full-length Fiction, and Short Stories.
All works submitted must present the gay and lesbian lifestyle in a positive
manner and be based on, or inspired by, a historic person, culture, event,
or work of art. Writing contests close on November 30th of each year.
Grants are $1000 and are not limited to a single winner. The Foundation
also offers grants (usually of $1000) to production companies to offset
expenses in producing gay-positive theatrical works based on history.

the role of art in the contemporary world. Currently offers a $3,000 award
for essays that present a "reading" of a text, art object, natural
object or event. Inter-disciplinary approaches are especially encouraged.
Include a one-page abstract. Essays may be submitted by the author or
nominated by another individual. Length open. Published or unpublished.

Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (John Simon)

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation provides fellowships for
advanced professionals in all fields (natural sciences, social sciences,
humanities, creative arts) except the performing arts. Fellows are selected
on the basis of two separate competitions, one for the United States
and Canada, the other for Latin America and the Caribbean. The Foundation
does not make grants to institutions, organizations, or students.

National Humanities Center Fellowships

The National Humanities Center offers 35-40 residential fellowships
for advanced study in all fields of the humanities. Applicants must
hold doctorate or equivalent credentials and have a record of publication.
The Center provides an environment for individual research and fosters
the exchange of ideas among scholars. Both senior and younger scholars
are eligible for fellowships, but the latter should be engaged in research
well beyond the subject of their doctoral dissertations. Fellowships
are for the academic year (September through May). Scholars from any
nation may apply. Humanistically inclined individuals from the natural
and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life may
also apply.
