Welcome to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Mississippi State
University. The Physics and Astronomy Department is part of MSU's
College
of Arts and Sciences. If you have any questions or comments feel
free to write, call, mail, or fax them to our department head Dr.
Mark A. Novotny.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers prospective students an
academic experience in which teaching excellence and a research
environment combine to provide an atmosphere for learning and success.
Fifteen
faculty members with degrees from universities throughout the world provide
instruction and student advising. Laboratory courses give students
"hands-on" experience and help to develop intuitive skills.
The wide-use of computers prepares students for our technological
society. Undergraduate involvement in research and opportunities for
summer programs add to the learning equation.
The
department sponsors chapters of the national physics honor society,
Sigma Pi Sigma, and of the Society
of Physics Students. These groups provide an informal atmosphere for
students to interact with their professors and others interested in
physics. Our chapter has hosted a regional meeting and, in recent years,
has attended the regional meetings in New Orleans, Auburn, Pensacola,
and Tuscaloosa.
