Our department's Theta Beta chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national honor society for political science, honors our most outstanding undergraduate students. Each year we induct our students into the society at an impressive luncheon, where a distinguished public servant is speaker. Most recently our speaker was Dr. Susan MacManus (at right in above picture), an election analyst from Florida who talked about how presidential campaigns have come to resemble reality television.
Other interesting speakers have included our department's own accomplished alumni, Scott Ross and Amy Tuck, the youngest man and woman elected to the state legislature. Ross serves as Mayor of West Point and as a College Board member, while Tuck went on to two terms as Lieutenant Governor. Above is a picture of some of the other alumni of our chapter.
Another interesting speaker was Insurance Commissioner George Dale, centered in the above picture, who is the longest serving elected Insurance Commissioner in the nation. Commissioner Dale delivered a valuable speech warning against the dangers of racially-polarized parties in Mississippi. Our alumni in the above picture are Heather Boren Emerson, who went on to the University of Alabama law school, and the first Haley Barbour Scholar Mike Miller.
