It is generally suggested that students enroll in 15 to 18 hours of course work. For beginning freshmen and many transfer students, the following areas of study are suggested.
1. Enroll in the English course printed on your Enrollment Form or the appropriate English composition course based on either your current enrollment in the course preprinted on the worksheet or your Advance Placement (AP) credit earned.
2. Enroll in the Math course printed on your Enrollment Form. Research has demonstrated that students who have been designated for enrollment in MA 0103 stand a greater chance of academic success in MA 1313 by first completing MA 0103.
3. Enroll in a Social Science course. The safest ones generally include PS 1113 (Political Science), PSY 1013 (General Psychology), and SO 1003 (Introduction to Sociology) or the honors equivalent for each.
4. Enroll in a Natural Science course and accompaning lab. Courses designated "with lab" have the same course symbol and number for both lecture and lab--be sure to enroll in each. The Natural Sciences are sub-divided into Life Sciences and Physical Sciences. The core courses in the Life Sciences have the course symbol "BIO", while core course in the Physical Sciences have the course symbols "CH", "GG", "GR",and "PH". If one or more of your possible majors of interest include a science-based curriculum, it may be in your best interest to take sciences specified for the major unless you have not met the prerequisites.
* Non-Science based majors: BIO 1004, 1023 or 1123; GG 1113 + GG 1111 or PH 1013 + PH 1011. BIO 1033 is NOT recommended for UND students, since it combines and excludes credit for BIO 1023 and 1123.
* Science based majors: (and enrolled in College Algebra MA 1313 or higher): BIO 1203 (Plant Biology), BIO 1504 (Principles of Zoology), CH 1043 (for nursing and some AGH), CH 1213 +1211 (Engineering & "true" science majors), PH 1113 (for arch., med.; prerequisites = MA 1313 & MA 1323 or registration in MA 1713), PH 2213 (for engr., math, physics, computer science; prerequisites = previous credit for MA 1713).5. Enroll in a History course (HI 1063, 1073, 1163, 1173, 1213, or 1223). A history course satisfies a humanities requirement. If you are considering education or engineering as a possible major, consult with your advisor prior to selecting your history course.
6. Enroll in a Fine Arts course. The safest courses are Art Appreciation (ART 1113), History and Appreciation of Music (MU 113), and Introduction to Theatre (CO 1503). If majors of interest include Architecture, Commuinication, Industrial Technology, Plant and Soil Sciences, Landscape Architecture or Music, postpone taking a fine arts course until you have narrowed your choice of majors. NOTE: Every fine arts course listed under university core is NOT accepted by all colleges and majors to satisfy minimum degree requirements.
7. Enroll in a Computer Literacy course. BIS or CS 1013 are suggested if you are not interested in a science-based major. If you are interested in a science-based major, consider CS 1213/23, etc. and consult your advisor prior to scheduling classes.
8. Enroll in Public Speaking (CO 1003 or honors equivalent, CO 1093), as long as you are currently enrolled in or have completed EN 1103 or higher.
* Note that the College of Arts and Sciences requires a Foreign Language for all majors in the humanities, social sciences, graphic arts and medical & science related areas.
