SUBJECT:  AOP 12.31 – Freshman Course Loads

PURPOSE

The purpose of this Academic Operating Policy and Procedure (AOP) is to establish the academic course load for freshmen students provisionally admitted to Mississippi State University.

REVIEW

This Academic Operating Policy and Procedure (AOP) will be reviewed every four years or whenever circumstances require an earlier review by the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs (APAA) with recommendations for revision presented to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

POLICY/PROCEDURE

Full admission to Mississippi State University requires 18 on the enhanced ACT (15 prior to October, 1989), high school graduation, and a designated high school core curriculum.  Entering freshmen students who do not meet full admission requirements at Mississippi State University, including those required to take developmental courses, may take no more than 14 hours of academic work.  Students so restricted in course load may also take one course in appropriate developmental, learning skills, or music ensemble programs in addition to the 14 hours of academic work.

Students who attain a 2.0 GPA at the end of their first semester will be allowed to take a normal load.  (See AOP 12.22 - Student Courseload.)
