STUDENT AFFAIRS OP 91.179: Senior Citizen Tuition Waivers
Date: August 13, 2009
February 14, 2007
Purpose
To outline the guidelines that allows senior citizens to enroll in MSU classes at no charge.
Policy
Mississippi State University provides a Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver Program for Mississippi residents age 60 or older for classes offered on the Starkville or Meridian campuses or by the Division of Academic Outreach and Continuing Education.
Procedure
Legal residents of the State of Mississippi age 60 or older (senior citizens) may enroll tuition-free in a maximum of two (2) on-campus courses per semester (or combined summer term) at the Starkville or Meridian campuses or the Division of Academic Outreach and Continuing Education (AOCE). Senior Citizens are limited to a maximum of six (6) semester hours per semester (fall, spring, or combined summer term) and a maximum of eighteen (18) credit hours per calendar year.
Additionally, AOCE will offer a maximum of three seats per course section to Senior Citizens under this tuition free program. Courses on all campuses are available to senior citizens on a space available, first-come, first-serve basis.
Tuition for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and all independent (correspondence) study courses, non-credit courses and workshops on all campuses are excluded from this Program.
This policy waives only the cost of tuition and required fees as set by IHL and Mississippi State University. Senior citizen students are responsible for paying any course or laboratory fees; distance fees; cost of course materials or textbooks. Credit hours taken in excess of the specified limits of this policy shall be paid by the senior citizen as the actual tuition for those hours.
Senior citizens may and are encouraged to apply for admission or readmission to MSU well before the semester starts. Once the admission process is complete, the University Registrar will register the senior citizen student for classes on the day (last work day) prior to the first class day so that the tuition waiver may be processed. If the Senior Citizen bypasses the Registrar’s Office and registers himself or herself for the course(s) the Registrar is authorized to deny the tuition waiver. The University Registrar staff will also assist senior citizens in the admission, readmission and registration processes. The University Registrar is located in Garner Hall, telephone 662-325-2662.
Review
The Vice President for Student Affairs, with input from the University Registrar, will review this operating policy every four years or as needed.
