STUDENT AFFAIRS OP 91.101: Definition of a Student
Date: December 1, 1998 (Revised 04/03/06)
Purpose
To provide uniform guidelines defining a student at Mississippi State University.
Policy
Certain members of the campus academic community at Mississippi State University shall be designated ‘students’ by the University, affording them certain rights and responsibilities different and distinct from those of the other members of the community (ie., faculty and staff).
Procedure
The term student is defined as any person who has been accepted for admission or re-admission to the University. The term student also includes any person enrolled or attending any seminar, workshop, short-course, etc., whether full-time or part-time, credit or noncredit, degree or nondegree.
For purposes of this policy, persons shall be considered students during any period which follows the end of either the Fall or Spring semester of their current enrollment until the last day of registration for the succeeding semester (Fall or Spring).
A person who was a student as defined in this policy above, but who did not enroll for the succeeding Fall or Spring semester, is not considered a student and must reapply for admission to the University. Under this provision, however, behavior in violation of the University’s Student Code of Conduct of which the University becomes aware, and that occurs prior to a person’s readmission, may still subject the person to the University’s disciplinary process once re-enrolled.
Review
The Vice President for Student Affairs is responsible for the review of this operating policy every five years or as needed.
