STUDENT AFFAIRS OP 91.120: Possession of Firearms, Explosives, or Other Devices, Substances, or Weapons

Purpose
To provide regulations and guidelines for the safety and welfare of the members and guests of the university community.
Policy
In accordance with university regulations and/or state law, the university prohibits:
The possession by a student of any firearm on the campus of Mississippi State University.
The possession of any type of explosive, other weapon, firecracker, or the like on university-controlled property. Exceptions may be permitted for fireworks displays planned in advance for celebrations.
Procedure
Students found in possession of firearms on the university campus may be suspended immediately pending a disciplinary hearing.
Students who use firearms threateningly against others, or who discharge firearms on campus, will be arrested and charged in the civil courts. They will also be suspended immediately from the university pending a disciplinary hearing.
Students who possess or use any type of explosive, other weapon, firecracker, or the like on university-controlled property will be subject to University Policies and Regulations Regarding Individual Behavior (See OP 91.100: Code of Student Conduct) and may be suspended immediately from the university pending a disciplinary hearing.
Exception permits for fireworks displays must be approved by the Dean of Students and issued by the Mississippi State University Police Department.
Review
The Vice President for Student Affairs is responsible for the review of this operating policy every five years or as needed.
