Research:     ìThe Potential Impacts Of Climate Variability On The Factors Affecting Songbird Demographyî

In the past 50 yrs global temperate has increased 0.6ƒC and this warming trend is expected to accelerate over the next century where temperatures are expected to rise an additional 1-6ƒC. What impact global warming will have on biodiversity is still uncertain but predictions suggest a major restructuring of current biological communities.  In order to predict and help alleviate any negative impacts to community structure it is imperative to understand the mechanisms driving community structure in relation to temperature variability and change. To address this question I am currently investigating the mechanisms driving Ovenbird and Black-throated Blue Warbler demographics along an elevation gradient in the Southern Appalachians. My study site is located at the Coweeta Hydrological Laboratory in Southwestern North Carolina where we are able to use elevation as a substitute for latitudinal change.

Field Experience:

Northern Arizona University ñ I worked for Phd candidate James Battin on a project investigating the effects of Ponderosa Pine forest restoration on songbird demography in Northern Arizona.

The Peregrine Fund -  I spent 2 years working with the California Condor reintroduction project along the Vermillion Cliffs in Northern Arizona. I also spent two summers helping with the release of the Aplomado Falcon in South Texas.

Audubon Society of New Hampshire ñ I spent a summer conducting point counts in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in order to ascertain the effects of forest management on avian communities.
