Pre-professional Options in Biological Sciences

Students earning a B.S. in Medical Technology or Microbiology can expect very good employment opportunities. In today's job market, most students who earn a B.S. degree in Biological Sciences will need to continue their education in graduate or professional school. There are a wide variety of options for students who decide to take this path. Students may go to professional school to become Physicians, Dentists, Optometrists, Pharmacists, or Veterinarians. Students who go on to Law school or Business School have excellent prospects because of the growth of biotechnology and the need for scientifically literate professionals. Other students may wish to go into Biological or Environmental Engineering. Still others may choose to become secondary school teachers by earning a Masters in Education. Some will earn a Ph.D. and will work in industry, consulting firms, government, and universities. All of these careers can start with a B.S. in Biology.

The Department of Biological Sciences offers several 2 to 3 year pre-professional options that prepare students for entrance into professional programs in:

  • Dentistry

  • Medicine

  • Nursing

  • Occupational Therapy

  • Physical Therapy (The UMC now offers a Ph.D. in Physical Therapy - see Dr. Don Downer for more info)

  • Optometry

  • Veterinary Medicine
