The Mississippi State University Chemistry Department has a long and distinguished history dating back to 1881. The first MS degree awarded by Mississippi A&M College (1885) was in chemistry. The Department was one of the first in the South to receive professional accreditation by the American Chemical Society for its undergraduate program in 1941, and it has been continually maintained to the present. The first Ph.D. in chemistry was awarded in 1967.

The Department offers curricula leading to the BA, BS (ACS certified), and BS undergraduate degrees as well as the MS and PhD graduate degrees. There are currently 17 tenured/tenure-track faculty and two instructors serving approximately 70 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students.
