The current cost of attendance at MSU is $26,000/year, but most graduate students receive some sort of financial support:
- Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need Fellowships - The U.S. Department of Education supports five
GAANN Fellows. Outstanding Ph.D. students are awarded a need-based stipend of up to $30,000 per year and an additional
allowance covers all tuition, fees and educational expenses. GAANN fellows teach one lab section per semester (3 contact hours/week,
plus prep., grading and meeting each week with the lab coordinator). The awards are restricted to U.S. citizens and permanent residents
and we especially encourage applications from underrepresented minority groups.
To apply, fill out this application form and return it to the Graduate Coordinator, Department of Chemistry, Mississippi State University, Mississippi State, MS 39762-9573 - Graduate Excellence Fellowships - A number of competitive fellowships are available for chemistry Ph.D. students. Awardees will receive a stipend of $24,000/year plus a full tuition waiver. The fellowship may be renewed annually if the student makes satisfactory progress toward the Ph.D.
- Teaching Assistantships (TA) - Most new students are offered a TA. In return, a student teaches two labs/semester. Weekly duties include 6 direct contact hours, plus grading time, and meeting with the lab coordinator. New TAs also staff the NMR training room. For 2007, a Ph.D. candidate awarded a TA will receive a minimum of $18,000/year ($17,000 for MS students) plus a full tuition waiver.
- Merit Supplements - Awarded to first-year students with exceptional promise. These awards are made annually and may be renewed once. Supplements of up to $5,000/yr may be added to the basic TA stipend.
- Research Assistantships (RA) - Usually awarded to more senior students, although occasionally offered to new students. An RA performs full-time research for the faculty member providing the funding.
- External Awards - numerous national awards (NSF, Merck....) are available to support graduate students. The Chemistry department will support the application of any current or prospective graduate student.
