Ethical Standards
The scientific endeavor demands absolutely honest and ethical behavior from its participants. Plagiarism, falsification of data, intentional misrepresentation of results, or any other form of ethical misconduct will not be tolerated. This standard applies to all aspects of the graduate program including coursework, teaching, and research. Despite any possible cultural differences relating to ethical behavior, ignorance of accepted practice and professional conduct will provide no excuse for any violation. It is the student's responsibility to understand and follow normally accepted ethical practices.
Miscellaneous Additional Requirements
- Graduate students are expected to attend all classes and turn in all assigned materials for courses in which they are enrolled.
- Graduate teaching assistants (TAs) must perform their assigned duties to the satisfaction of the appropriate lab coordinator in order to retain their TA.
- Five (5) years is considered the maximum for which the Department of Chemistry is committed to providing a TA for a Ph.D. candidate.
- Three (3) years is considered the maximum for which the Department of Chemistry is committed to providing a TA for the M.S. student.
- Students must continually demonstrate satisfactory progress toward their chemistry degree to retain a TA, RA, or fellowship.
- A student in academic trouble can at any time submit a petition for special consideration by the faculty. The petition should initially be presented to the student's committee and, if supported for further action, subsequently forwarded to the Graduate Affairs Committee.
- Dropping a course past the published drop date or withdrawing from the university requires prior approval by the Graduate Coordinator. Any assistantship will be terminated immediately if a student's academic load drops below the minimum nine semester hours.
