Coastal Plain Experiment Station - A Brief History
The Coastal Plain Branch Experiment Station was established in 1946
and is composed of 1175 acres located east of Newton in Newton County and
is the site of one of three MAFES Dairy Herds. The primary research
mission of the Coastal Plain Station is in the area of dairy and forage
research. The research herd of 175 registered Holstein cows is one of the
top DHIA herds in the state.
The research program continues its emphasis
in dairy management, nutrition, animal health, reproductive physiology, and
year round forage systems.
Research with major row crops (cotton, corn, soybean, and small
grains) revolve around soil fertility, plant needs, variety
development, and tillage conservation management. Studies at this
location also include research seeking more environmentally friendly
systems for livestock waste management.
