EN 4413/6413, History of the English Language

Instructor: Siddiqi

(MWF 11:00am) This course is a linguistic approach to the external (the events in the world that helped shape the language) and internal (the changes to the language itself) history of English. This class will trace the history of English from English's ancient ancestor (Proto-Indo-European) through Common Germanic (English's ancestor around the time of Julius Caesar and Jesus Christ) to the Old English to today. In this class we will focus on systematic changes in the language. Assessments for this course include sporadic homework, a term paper, an in class presentation, and two exams.
