NMMC is a 650 bed facility
located in Tupelo, Mississippi. The Food and Nutrition Services
Department utilizes a cook/chill central commissary system
that produces bulk food for multiple facilities and serves
it on a variety of patient service systems. Retail customers
include NMMC Child Care Center, catering, and multiple cafeterias.
The food budget exceeds $3 million annually. The department
averages 3,500 meals served per day with 130 full-time equivalent
employees. A full spectrum of clinical nutrition services
employs 12 dietitians on the main campus. Acute care, nutrition
support, rehab, long term care, neo-natal intensive care
unit, home care, Wellness Center, and community education
are provided. The philosophy of the Food and Nutrition Services
is "process improvement" that utilizes coaching.
Some unique characteristics include: 2002 JCAHO Accreditation
with Accommendation, the largest non-metropolitan hospital
in America; electronic charting; continuum of care within
the system; and a cook/chill system.
Mission:
"To continuously improve the health of the people of our region." Primary
and Tertiary Care for 22 rural counties in northeast Mississippi and northwest
Alabama. NMHS, a corporation, provides state of the art health care across
the spectrum including primary care, specialty clinics, home care services,
long term care, and acute care in community hospitals and a referral medical
center.
BAPTIST MEMORIAL HOSPITAL – GOLDEN
TRIANGLE (BMH-GT)

Baptist Memorial Hospital is
a 328 bed hospital located in Columbus, MS. The Food and
Nutrition Department at BMH-GT Dietary Department is staffed
with 46 FTE's. There are 8 DI/GSP preceptors. Services provided
include food service for patients, families, hospital staff
and physicians; and catering services. Nutrition therapy
services include inpatient and outpatient counseling, community
service lectures, staff education programs, and a nutrition
resource center. The Nutrition Therapy services provides
nutrition care/or acts as a consult resource for skilled
nursing care unit, Hospice, Cardiac rehab services, Pulmonary
rehab services, Diabetes Program and Support Group, Breastfeeding.
Nutrition services includes cancer treatment center, cardiac
services, and women's treatment center. Dietary also plays
a large role in the hospital's patient care committees that
develop patient care guidelines and in Joint Commission readiness.
Mission:
As a major health care provider for east Mississippi and
west Alabama residents, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden
Triangle (located in Columbus, MS) is one of the forerunners
in the health care industry. The 328 bed regional medical
center is the largest regional hospital in the Baptist
Memorial Health Care Corp., headquartered in Memphis, TN.
BMH-GT is the seventh largest provider of medical/surgical
services in Mississippi and is home of the Thad Cochran
Perinatal Facility which features six Labor-Delivery-Recovery
suites, a well baby nursery, and a neonatal intensive care
unit. More than 85 physicians cover most all areas of medical
expertise including cardiology, neurology, pulmonology,
internal medicine, and gastroenterology. BMH-GT offers
many programs to the community including a Hospice program
for the terminally ill; Willowbrook Behavioral and Mental
Health Services; a 24-hour emergency ambulance service;
the Wellness Center; a home care service; a subacute skilled
nursing care unit; a variety of educational programs and
classes for the public; a speaker's bureau; various support
groups for patients and their families.
OKTIBBEHA COUNTY HOSPITAL
(OCH)

OCH is a 96 bed hospital located
in Starkville, MS. The Food and Nutrition Department at OCH
is managed by Morrison Management Specialists. With more
than 500 employees, this progressive, rural hospital provides
capable, compassionate care for its inpatients—as well
as for its almost 20,000 annual emergency room visitors and
its more than 18,000 outpatients. OCH provides state-of-the-art
services through its almost 100 staff physicians, most of
whom are board-certified and some of whom are even fellowship-trained.
The hospital has more than 12 medical specialties and local
patients can also receive care in sports medicine, sleep
medicine, speech therapy, and physical therapy. In a previous
expansion, the hospital created the OCH HealthPlex, a more
than 30,000 square foot facility that houses the hospital’s
rehab services, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs,
and the Wellness Connection, a total fitness center dedicated
to improving the health and well-being of area residents.

by the hospital.

North Mississippi Medical
Center—Eupora (NMMC-Eupora)

NMMC-Eupora, a not-for-profit
company, is comprised of a 38-bed acute care hospital and
a 36-bed long-term care facility. To further rehabilitate
after a patient’s acute care stay in the hospital,
10 of the hospital beds are designated for Swing Bed Care.
One of NMMC-Eupora’s greatest strengths is the quality
of its medical staff. The medical staff offers specialists
in family practice, pathology and radiology. Outpatient services
include physical therapy speech therapy, occupational therapy,
laboratory and pulmonary rehabilitation. Radiology services
include echocardiogram, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, mammography,
bone density and computerized tomography (CT). Eupora also
offers 24-hour paramedic-level emergency services, outpatient
rehabilitation services, a child care/learning center and
Wellness Center. Two Eupora employees were honored in 2000
as Emergency Medical Service Administrator of the Year and
Emergency Medical Service-Paramedic of the Year by the Mississippi
Emergency Medical Technician Association. The Eupora campus
includes Eupora Medical Clinic, which is part of the NMMC
system regional medical clinic network, as well as a branch
office for NMMC’s Home Health Agency. Community residents
who join the Wellness Center in Eupora can take advantage
of cardiovascular and weight equipment, aerobic dance and
exercise classes. In 2003, NMMC-Eupora opened a $10 million
expansion project which involves a two-story, 30,800 square
foot expansion and renovation of 30,000 square feet of existing
space. The new construction provided for 38 private inpatient
rooms, along with new facilities for admissions, outpatient
services, and food and nutrition services. The renovated
space encompasses support services as well as some clinical
services. Eupora also recognizes the importance of promoting
good health through education. Community outreach projects
include informative health seminars, inexpensive immunizations
and health screenings. While some programs are sponsored
solely by Eupora, others reflect collaborative efforts with
other interested parties—such as employers, schools
and organizations.
MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY
EXTENSION SERVICE (MSU-ES)

Mission:
The Mississippi State University Extension Service provides
research-based information, educational programs, and technology
transfer focused on issues and needs of the people of Mississippi,
enabling them to make informed decisions about their economic,
social, and cultural well-being. The Smith-Lever Act of
1914 established the Cooperative Extension System, a publicly
funded, informal educational system that links the United
States Department of Agriculture, the land-grant university
system, and individual counties. As the off-campus educational
arm of Mississippi State University, Extension provides
current research and educational information to individuals
in all 82 counties. The Mississippi State University Extension
Service is also a cooperating partner with Alcorn State
University, the 1890 land-grant institution in Mississippi.
Agriculture and natural resources; family and consumer
education, enterprise and community resource development,
and 4-H youth development are Extension's ongoing priorities
or "base programs." From these base programs,
specific subjects or efforts emerge to receive emphasis
for a period of time. These are called initiatives. Extension's
overall purpose is education - education that will empower
people to make intelligent decisions relating to their
vocations, their families, and their environment. Extension's
unique interdisciplinary perspective enables the organization
to make a real difference in the lives of Mississippians.

Description:
The Mississippi State University Extension Service is one
component of the MSU Department of Food Science, Nutrition
and Health Promotion nutrition program. Two Human Nutrition
Specialists serve as resource persons to field faculty
and staff of the 82 counties in Mississippi by providing
them with technical assistance, program materials, nutrition
education training, and regular nutrition updates. County
and Regional field staff use services and materials in
planning county-specific activities on nutrition topics
that impact families.
MISSISSIPPI STATE DEPARTMENT
OF HEALTH (MSDH)
Practice Hours: 128 Weeks of Supervised Practice: 4 (MTWT)
District IV Health Offices
(10 counties) average 14-30 daily patient contacts by Public
Health Nutritionists. WIC provides supplemental food and
nutrition education to pregnant, postpartum, and breast-feeding
women, infants, and preschool children (1-5 yrs of age) to
help improve the outcomes of pregnancies and reduce health
problems.
Mission:
The mission of the State Department of Health and its county
health department units is to improve the health of all
Mississippians; to protect through data acquisition and
analysis, regulation, disease investigation and control,
and the provision of prevention based service, to promote
health through education, policy development, and community
empowerment, to prevent illness and injury before they
occur, to provide or assure the provision of essential
public health services. The agency, through the work of
public health team members across the state, strives to
accomplish the mission utilizing the following underlying
