ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS OF THE CONOWINGO DAM

Take note to the large amount of sediment build up on the open gate picture (right).  The large amount of environmetal concern and controversy is for this very reason.

On one side of the arguement, the environment is over concern of the area and life surrounding the Dam. Within the next few years, this increasing amount of sediment build-up could damage the Dam and all of the living organisms in and around the Dam. As you can see, there is marine life in the dam but it might be affected soon.

On the other side of the arguement the dam is important to people, and animals, because it generates the electrical power to maintain life.

However, both sides of the arguement agree that we need to fix the sediment problem!
The Conowingo Dam is a vital place for a lot of people. It will be a huge disaster if anything happened. The problem is we may have a storm called the 50 year storm. If we have this storm everything will be bad for the Dam and it’s users. The sediment build up in the Dam will overflow and ruin the Dam and it’s surroundings.

The Army Corp of Engineers has been observing, collecting data, and working on a solution to the problem.  One solution that has been proposed is to build another dam further up-stream.  Environmentalists argue that building another dam would just create another problem.
