Peach Bottom Slate, Northern Harford County

The Peach Bottom Slate area of Northern Harford County is unique historically and geologically.  Students will examine the rock structure and mineral composition of the Peach Bottom slate, understand the historical significance of this region, and experience methods of slate shingle production.

Individual presentations will be given on the following topics:

Drive to Delta, Pennsylvania to visit the Old Line Museum.

Here students will tour the museum and learn of the history of Peach Bottom slate and the quarries from which it was mined.  While driving through Cardiff, Maryland and Delta, Pennsylvania, observe the houses and building roofs made of Peach Bottom slate.
 
 

Drive to Jones Slate Quarry, just outside of Cardiff, Maryland.
(11AM)

The group will hike together out to see the the water-filled pit of the old Jones Slate Quarry.

Pit is about 800 feet long, 100 feet wide, and 70 feet deep to the water elevation.  Water is about 70 feet deep.

Broken into groups of 2 or 3, groups will compete in a "Slate Splitting" Competition, using safety goggles, chisel, and hammer obtaining samples from the remains of the waste pile.

Drive to Slate Ridge Quarry, just outside Cardiff, Maryland
(2PM)

Geologic Maps of Harford County, Maryland will be distributed, introduced and discussed.

As a group, a hike up to and around the Slate Ridge Quarry to observe both the history and the geology of the area.

The Slate Ridge Quarry is the oldest slate quarry in America. 

The Peach Bottom Syncline, located at Slate Ridge Quarry, is the highest point in elevation in Harford County, Maryland.

Smaller groups will be asked to complete the geologic map activity provided in the morning with daily handouts.

Elevation measurements and observations will be taken for climatology completion activity for Maryland

Obtaininga sample of slate from the remaining slag piles, smaller groups will analyze the mineral composition of the Slate Ridge Quarry slate, relating their findings to the information provided in their notebooks of the chemical make-up.

Through the completion of these activities, groups will gain a stronger understanding of the origin and  formation of the Peach Bottom Slate.
