HIKING TO REMAINS OF CANAL

As the students begin their hike, they encounter still water-filled remains of the canal.  Water is easily accessible for water quality testing.  On a few occassions hikers may see the water well populated with ducks.

As seen in the above picture, students will be able to walk within one of the dry canals and see up-close the schist walls that the canals were constructed with.  Students will find that the walls of the canal are in rather good condition, considering they have been abandoned for over 100 years.

This above picture shows what the students would see viewing the Schist walls of the canal.  Notice the foliated easily depicting the rock name.
