Avery Island, Louisiana is located about
45 miles south of Lafayette, Louisiana. It is one of the so-called
"Five Islands". It is not a true island, however it is and elevated
mound surrounded by Holocene coastal marshes. This island is one of the
salt domes still in operation today. However, the mines are no longer
open to the public because of the hazards they propose.
