One location of the abandoned meander scar
of the Mississippi is located two miles north of Sunset, Louisiana
on I-49 off of the frontage road. The Mississippi River ran through
this area approximately 120,000 years ago.
The ranch seen in this photo is privately
owned and operated.
This photo shows cows in the background
near the trees. If you look at the trees closest to the road you
can get an idea of how deep the scar is by the height of the cypress trees
located on the left of the picture. Because this area is prone to
flooding, it is used for raising cattle. The cattle can move to higher
ground during a storm as seen in the picture above.
