The sand and gravel pit shown below is
an operation located north of Lafayette. The pit is one of the best
locations to show some of the local geology in the Lafayette area.
The pit is approximately 50 feet deep and
has penetrated the top of the water table. The water table was actually
higher than seen in the picture below. The water was pumped out and
disposed of. To the left of the barge there is some cross-bedding.
After areas have been mined the pit is closed up with various materials, in this case, trees have been cut down to fill in the hole.
The bulldozzer in the background is used
to fill in the hole with all types of material. Here trash, cememt,
and other debris was used.
