Calvery Cemetary has a variety of gravesites to visit. Some of the graves are covered with cement and marked by a tombstone. Others are monuments as high as 10 feet.
This picture shows the different sizes and heights of the tombs. The question is: Why are so many people buried above ground in South Louisiana especially in the New Orleans area? The amount of rainfall in Louisiana is one of the main reasons for burial above ground, especially in New Orleans which is below sea-level. There are no basements in Lousiana because they would be flooded out.
