Gray Benton shales are found on the ridge indicating that sea level rose and flooded the low lying coastal plain. This sea was very shallow, a few hundred feet deep, compared to the modern oceans of today that in places are thousands of feet deep. As seen in the picture, the seaway extended across North America from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.
