Within the sandy and muddy sediments of the ridge there are many burrows and trails of invertebrate organisms as the picture above shows.  These are called trace fossils.  Much has been inferred from the studies of these fossils.  Creatures that are alive today create the same type of burrows and markings that are found here, so researchers have drawn conclusions about what this area looked like millions of years ago.  It is believed that these creatures prefer quiet, shallow, warm water near the sea, therefore this area a bay or a cove.
