Local Field Methods 2003

Welcome to the great state of Virginia! Virginia is a very historical state, having born 8 presidents and where many famous Civil War battles were fought. Although history is an important part of Virginia, the most impressive feature of this state  may well be in the diversity of its geology. You may travel from the Allegheny Plateau, with all of its rich sources of coal and petroleum, to the Coastal section where you may discover whale and shark fossils as you fish for shad in the Potomac River. What is really great is the fact you can discover all of this in one day! I wouldn't recommend doing that though. You would miss out on too many of the great details. What I have proposed in this webpage are two field studies. The first one is a field study that is directed toward 7th or 8th grade students and can be accomplished in one day. The other is a week long field study for teachers that will take them on a journey from the hills of this state to the great waters of the Chesapeake Bay. So, get your sunscreen, bugspray, and water bottles and join in the adventure!
