Adaptations to the environment

This area describes how animals adapt to the African savanna and tropical rain forest climates.

African Savanna
The savanna climate is characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. During the dry season which occurs in the winter, the lakes and streams dry up, much of the plant life dies and the animals need to migrate for food.  When the rains return in the summer the animals return. The temperature ranges between 68 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. The average rainfall is 10-30 inches.  The climate of the savanna is largely influenced by its proximity between the ITCZ and subtropical highs.
Tropical Rain forest
This region is characterized by warm temperature and high precipitation.  The average temperature in between 68 and 93 degrees Fahrenheit.  The average precipitation is between 50 and 260 inches.  The daily temperature ranges in this region show much more variation than the annual temperature range.  Most of these climates lie near the equator.
Humid Subtropical
The climate of Alabama is characterized by hot summers and mild winters. The average high is 91 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low is 30 degrees Fahrenheit.  The rainfall average for the state is 57 inches.  Alabama has four distinct seasons.  The driest time of the year is October and the wettest is April.
