Silt Bluffs and Terrace Above Okanagan LakeThe fifth day of our trip begins with a short fifteen minute drive back north along Highway 97. To the west of the highway just before the town of Summerland is the turnoff to our first stop: the federal Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre and Summerland Ornamental Gardens. We will have a chance to have informal discussions with some of the research scientists here on such topics as soil resource conservation and land evaluation. We will then take a walking tour of the adjacent Summerland Ornamental Gardens and discover Xeriscape Gardening and how it is related to the climate of the southern Okanagan.
After lunch in the gardens, we will head back further north to the Sumac Ridge Estate Winery. Along the way, we will stop at various locations to view the silt bluffs that are very characteristic of this area. The winery site is the site of some tilted sandstone and coal strata that will give us the opportunity to practice taking strike and dip in the field. We will then have the chance to tour the winery and have dinner at the winery's bistro.
After dinner, we will return to Penticton for our overnight stay.
