Day 6: Dominion Road Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO), Southern Okanagan, andNightTourofOsoyoosDesertCenter

Osoyoos Desert Center at Dusk

Day 6 of our trip begins with another short drive from the town of Penticton.  This time we will be travelling south on Highway 97 for about 15 minutes.

Our first stop takes us to another federal research facility, the Dominion Road Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO).  DRAO is the site of numerous radio telescopes that are being used for research by astronomers from all over the world.

We will be taking a customized guided tour at this stop.

After our visit to the DRAO we will take a leisurely drive southwards towards the towns of Oliver and Osoyoos.  Along the way we will be able to observe many orchards and vineyards.  Many of the orchards have adopted frost control methods due to the location of some of their land in low lying areas.

After dinner, we will be taking our first of two tours of the Osoyoos Desert Center.  This evening will have us exploring the nocturnal life of the northernmost tip of the Sonoran Desert.

We will overnight in Osoyoos tonight and since this is the last night of our trip we will hopefully be able to have a stargazing party if the weather permits.  This is an ideal location for this as it is usually clear and we are well away from any significant city light.

Stop 1: Dominion Road Astrophysical Observatory

Stop 2: Explore the orchards of  the Southern Okanagan Valley.  Discover frost control methods.

Stop 3: Evening tour of Osoyoos Desert Center
