
Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN)
Fellowship Program at
Mississippi State University.
The GAANN program is designed to provide financial support to students of superior ability who demonstrate financial need to sustain and enhance their capacity for teaching and research in academic areas of national need as designated by the U.S. Secretary of Education. The designated areas are as follows:
Biological Sciences
Chemistry
Computer and Information Sciences
Engineering
Geological and Related Sciences
Mathematics
Physics
Mississippi State University currently offers a GAANN Fellowship program in the academic areas of chemistry and engineering physics.
The objective of the program is to enlarge the pool of U.S. citizens who intend to pursue teaching and research careers in the academic areas designated by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
Requirements
Each student must be accepted into their program before becoming eligible to apply for the GAANN fellowship. GAANN is designed to support students pursuing the highest possible degree available in their course of study. The fellowship candidate must meet the following requirements:
Be a permanent resident in the United States, permanent resident of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Island, or are present in the U.S. with the intent to become a permanent resident.
Demonstrate financial need according to federal needs guidelines.
Be a minority or a woman pursuing a Ph.D in an underrepresented area.
Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need Award
All GAANN fellows will receive a stipend specified by the program for the academic year. The university will waive all tuition payments and the department may supplement these awards with additional support, to ensure competitive stipends.

All applicants must provide the following:
Completed application form for admission to the Office of Graduate Studies at Mississippi State University
Statement of purpose for graduate study
Three letters of recommendation
Records of previous academic achievements
Standardized test scores (according to the academic program)
An application for the GAANN Fellowship Program at Mississippi State University
