Submission of the Dissertation or Thesis

The following steps are to be observed in the submission of dissertations and theses.

  1. Submit one complete copy on regular paper of the dissertation/thesis to The Thesis and Dissertation Office in the Mitchell Memorial Library.  The deadline for the first submission is posted in the current issue of the Graduate Bulletin and in the academic calendar.

The approval page should be printed on the required paper (see the Format and Appearance section of the Guidelines, for details) and should be affixed with all signatures.

  1. The format and content of the dissertation/thesis will be checked and the copy will be returned to the student for corrections.

  2. After corrections are made, the dissertation/thesis will be resubmitted to the Library for a second check.

  3. The two final copies of the dissertation/thesis, on the required paper, will be submitted to the Library by the last day for submitting signed dissertations/theses, which is the second deadline date listed in the Graduate Bulletin and the academic calendar.  Each copy will be contained in its own manila envelope with a clasp closure.  In addition, a third envelope will be submitted with three extra copies of the abstract and one extra copy of the title page, all on the required paper.  The following information should appear in the upper left corner of the envelopes:  student's name, manuscript title in full, distinction of which copy (first or second copy, abstracts), major field of study, and graduate date.  The following is an example:

  1. Microfilming of all dissertations and theses is required.  If the dissertation or thesis is to be copyrighted, the student must complete a copyright agreement.  The necessary copyrighting and microfilming forms are available in the Technical Services Office of the Mitchell Memorial Library.

  2. All fees for binding, microfilming, and/or copyrighting will be paid at the cashier's window prior to submission of the final two copies of the document.  The receipt will be returned to the Library for verification of payment by the time the final copies of the document are submitted (see dates given in the Graduate Bulletin and the academic calendar).

  3. Submission of a dissertation or thesis will all required signatures should not be interpreted as approval for graduation.  Approval comes only after the document is read and the format reviewed relative to the dissertation/thesis guidelines.

Since it is not unusual for corrections to be generated from the review by the Library, a student should not make plans to leave the university until his or her document has received final approval.
