In 1994, department faculty members Betty Scarborough,
Bill England, Michael
Neumann, and Michael Pearson wrote the proposal "Student Research
Projects in Multivariate Calculus," and submitted it to the Division
of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation. The proposal was funded
for $50,000 as NSF grant number 9551248. The project received a matching grant from
ILI. These funds were used to develop the computer lab in which
faculty and students develop high quality multivariate research
projects that utilize the computer algebra system Mathematica. The
computer lab contains 25 pentium-class workstations, a visual
projection system and an Hewlett-Packard laser printer. The facility is a lab
open to all students enrolled in mathematics or statistics courses,
and is sometimes used for classroom instruction. Graduate teaching
assistants who are knowledgeable in the use of several types of
software used in the department staff the lab to help students.
(The lab is closed on Saturday.)
