Functional Analysis and Operator Theory

A common thread of the research interests of the functional analysis and operator theory group is the local spectral theory of bounded linear operators on Banach spaces. Particular emphasis is on the connections and applications to Fredholm theory, function-theoretic operator theory, and the theory of cyclic phenomena for operators on Banach spaces. Further interest is in the connections between local spectral theory and the theory of Banach algebras, in particular group and measure algebras on locally compact abelian groups. Another research emphasis is the area of convex analysis with applications to the theory of flows in networks and mathematical economics.

Faculty conducting research in functional analysis and operator theory

  • Vivien Miller - hypercyclicity and local spectral theory
  • Michael Neumann - Banach algebras, local spectral theory, and convex analysis
  • Robert Smith - function-theoretic operator theory
