The 1998 agricultural income statistics are shown below for the six largest farm commodity groups. The farm value data were multiplied by linkage multipliers for the corresponding commodities to estimate the total economic impact of each commodity upon the economy of Mississippi. The linkage multipliers are reported by the Mississippi Research and Development Center in the publication A Study of Input-Output Model, 1986 by Kuhn C. Lee. Much of the information shown in the following table was provided by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and the Mississippi Agricultural Economics Department, Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service, Mississippi State University.
Tot Economic Annual Farm Value Linkage Impact Percent Commodity (Million $) Multiplier (Million $) Change ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Poultry & Eggs 1,536 6.29 9,662 7.4%
Forestry 1,334 2.84 3,788 9.3%
Cotton 508 2.65 1,345 -2.3%
Catfish 307 7.73 2,371 15.3%
Soybeans 290 2.62 761 -40.1%
Rice 136 2.79 379 2.2%

The poultry and egg industry continues to lead the list of Mississippi's agricultural industries in both both farm value of products produced and the total economic impact to our state. The total farm value income produced by all of Mississippi's agricultural commodities was $4.9 billion in 1998. The contribution of the poultry industry in terms to farm value of products accounts for 32% of the total farm value from all agricultural products.
The majority of agricultural income for poultry and eggs is provided by broilers (86%) and commercial eggs (10%). Spent hens and non-commercial farm chickens contributed 3% of the total poultry and egg income.
Mississippi ranked as the fourth largest broiler producing state by producing 722,400,000 broilers with a total weight of 3.253 billion pounds that had a farm value of $1,370 million. Mississippi also ranked as the fifteenth highest egg producing state with 1.578 million commercial and hatching eggs with a value of $159 million. Approximately 60% of all commercial eggs and 93% of all broilers produced in Mississippi were exported to other states and countries. On an average, Mississippi produced 22.9 broilers and 50 commercial/hatching eggs during each second of 1998.
The production, processing and marketing facilities of the Mississippi poultry industry has an estimated value of more than one billion dollars. The annual employee payroll and payments to producers total approximately $500 million. About 2,750 farm families produce eggs or broilers under contract with commercial broiler or egg companies in our state.
The poultry industry used vast quantities of feed ingredients for manufacturing the 3.1 million tons of finished poultry feeds used in 1998. The major feed ingredients were equivalent to 50% of all soybeans and 65% of all corn and grains annually produced in Mississippi. The grain usage (including corn, grain sorghum and wheat) averaged approximately 50 railcars daily. An additional 20 railcars of soybean meal were used each day in combination with animal meals, grain byproducts, minerals and miscellaneous ingredients. Finished feeds manufactured during 1998 for feeding Mississippi's poultry was equivalent to 200 pounds for each second of the year.
