The Poultry Science Department also offers the Doctor of Philosophy degree only to majors in animal physiology, animal nutrition and food science and technology. In accordance with University policy, the Doctor of Philosophy degree requires a minimum of three years beyond the Bachelor's degree to satisfy course requirements, a preliminary/comprehensive examination, admission to candidacy, a dissertation and defense of the dissertation. The dissertation director and graduate committee will determine specific course requirements for the student's graduate program.
Supporting work for a minor can be taken in almost any field of the basic sciences. Although a background in agriculture is desirable, students with training in chemistry, zoology and mathematics usually are well qualified to pursue graduate degrees in Poultry Science and the allied interdisciplinary graduate programs. Research assistantships are available for qualified individuals.
