NTR 8123 Methods In Nutrition Research

COURSE SYLLABUS

Catalog Description

Fall semester. (Prerequisites: NTR 8114 and ST 8114 or equivalent). Two hours lecture. Three hours laboratory. Application of analytical methods used in research techniques; practice in writing research proposals, conducting a research project, and preparing research findings suitably for scientific publication.

The course will be divided into 4 parts with classroom exercises surrounding laboratory exercises.

Part I – Scientific Misconduct, Animal Care and Human Subject Research
Most NIH and NSF grants now require training in these areas. This type of training is becoming more important to the researcher. We will have an overview lecture and discussion of each topic.

Part II – Experimental Design Basics
The objective is to learn acceptable experimental design and recognize the required statistical analyses. Initially, the instructor will lead the class in critical reviews of studies published in refereed journals. Then the students will each present a review.

Part III – Practical Experimental Design
Students will design a research project that they will set up and conduct with over sight of the instructor. Each experiment will be reviewed by the instructor to ensure proper techniques and animal husbandry.

Part IV – Manuscript Preparation
Students will write a manuscript describing their research project. This manuscript will be in the format required by the appropriate journal. The manuscripts will be reviewed and may be submitted for publication.
