The Southern
Region accounts for 65% of the total value of aquaculture products produced in the United
States. It has been estimated that the
economic impact to the four primary catfish producing states (Mississippi, Arkansas,
Alabama, and Louisiana) is over $4 billion. The
continued growth and importance of aquaculture in the Southern Region, coupled with a lack
of RRF-sponsored activity in this area, necessitates a mechanism for research scientists
involved in aquaculture to meet regularly and exchange information. In addition, timely transfer of new technology to
producers and identification of potential problems needing research require increased
communication with Extension specialists. The
objectives of the current SERA are: 1) to bring together on an annual basis, research
scientists and extension specialists from a diversity of disciplinary backgrounds who
share a common interest in warmwater aquaculture; 2) to exchange current information on
the status of new research findings; 3) to gain a regional perspective to current relevant
problems; and 4) to consider joint activities that might be proposed. |
