SERA-IEG-9 Annual Meeting Minutes
March 24-26, 1997
University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee

Monday - March 24, 1997

The annual meeting of the Aquatic Food Animals from Warmwater Aquaculture was intervened at the Ellington Plant Sciences Building on the University of Tennessee campus at 8:30 a.m. Dr. D.M. Gossett, Vice President for Agriculture, welcomed the group.  Dr. Tom Hill was recognized as host of the meeting and for meeting arrangements.  Dr. David Foster and Dr. David Teem encouraged the group to continue its work and expressed the feeling that the group was one of the better information/exchange groups in the Southern region.

Research and Extension Summaries were passed out.  Most of the Universities and Federal Labs attending provided each participant with summaries of current research and extension projects related to aquaculture at their institutions.  These summaries contained titles, abstracts, and the contact person(s) on the project.  These written summaries were initiated in 1994 and proven to be very popular with the SERA-IEG-9 participants.

Following the opening session, information/exchange workgroups were formed.  Workgroups included: 1) Nutrition, 2) Alternative Culture Methods, 3) Shellfish, 4) Alternative Culture Species, 5) Food Safety, 6) Genetics, 7) Economics/Marketing, 8) Water Quality, 9) Parasites and Diseases, and 10) Yield Verification.

After the afternoon sessions the entire SERA-IEG-9 group car-pooled to Uncle Bud’s Catfish House for dinner.

Tuesday - March 25, 1997

This morning started with make-your-own omelet breakfast in the auditorium at the Ellington Plant Sciences building.

A general session was convened after breakfast which featured agency reports.  Agencies that reported included CSREES of USDA from Meryl Broussard  and Gary Jensen, Harry Dupree of the USDA lab at Stuttgart, AR, and Don Freeman of the USDA lab at Pine Bluff, AR.  After the general session the Information/Exchange groups reports were given.

Clemson University in South Carolina volunteered to host the SERA-IRG-9 meeting in 1998.  The meeting will again be held in March.
